Subtle Film Grain Overlay
Sometimes the goal is not a film look at all, just enough texture that an image stops looking plastic. This light preset adds fine, soft grain that breaks up banding in skies and gradients and keeps skin from looking over-smoothed.

Subtle Film Grain Overlay example

What subtle grain is for
Smooth gradients such as skies, studio backdrops, and skin can show visible steps (banding) after editing or 8-bit export. A small amount of grain adds variation that breaks those steps up, so the gradient looks continuous again.
Light grain also gives heavily retouched or AI-generated images back some surface texture. The aim is that viewers notice an image feels more natural, not that they notice the grain.
Best for
- Portraits and beauty retouching that look over-smoothed
- Skies, gradients, and studio backdrops that show banding
- Product and e-commerce photos that should stay clean but not sterile
Recommended settings
| Setting | Value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Intensity | 15–25% | Enough to break up banding without being noticed at normal viewing distance. |
| Grain size | 2px | Fine grain hides gradient steps without adding visible pattern. |
| Roughness | 0–8% | Keeps the texture smooth and unobtrusive. |
| Softness | 40–50% | Rounded, soft clusters avoid a noisy, digital look. |
Using subtle grain
- 1
Add grain as the very last step, after sharpening and resizing, so it is not smoothed away or exaggerated.
- 2
Blend with Soft Light and judge at 100% zoom on smooth areas such as skies or backgrounds.
- 3
Export JPEG at quality 85 or higher, or WebP. Very low quality settings remove fine grain and can bring the banding back.
Limits: Subtle grain reduces the visibility of banding but cannot repair severe posterization. Fix those in the edit first, ideally at 16-bit depth.

Subtle Film Grain Overlay FAQ
Does adding grain really reduce banding?
It reduces visible banding by dithering the steps between tones. It works best for mild banding in skies and gradients.
Will light grain increase my file size?
A little. Grain adds detail the encoder has to keep. Fine, soft grain at low intensity has a much smaller effect than coarse grain.
Is light grain good for AI-generated images?
Yes. A subtle overlay is a common way to make overly smooth renders feel more photographic without changing the composition.
