Terms of Service
Last updated: September 20, 2026
Agreement
These terms govern your use of imagegrain.com, the in-browser film-grain editor, the optional open-source MCP server and Claude Desktop extension, and the hosted MCP endpoint at imagegrain.com/mcp (including use through assistants such as Muse). By using those services you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use them.
Operator
imagegrain is operated by Maximilian Braun, Burgstallgasse 10, 93309 Kelheim, Germany. Contact: maximilian.braun@posteo.de. Legal disclosure is on the Imprint. How data is handled is on the Privacy Policy.
The service
imagegrain applies deterministic film grain and optional analog adjustments (fade, warmth, vignette, monochrome) to still photos you already have. It does not generate new photographs with an AI model, fetch remote image URLs, or require an account. The website editor runs in your browser. The stdio MCP server and desktop extension run on your own computer. The hosted MCP endpoint processes a photo you send for that request only.
No charge, no account
The public website and the published MCP server are free to use and do not accept payments. There is no sign-up, login, or subscription. That can change; if it does, these terms will be updated first.
Your photos and your rights
You must have the right to process any photo you run through imagegrain. You keep all rights in your original and in the exported result. imagegrain claims no ownership of your photos. The website editor and the local MCP server do not upload your photos to imagegrain.com. The hosted MCP endpoint receives only the photo included in that API call.
Acceptable use
Use imagegrain only in ways that are lawful. Do not attempt to disrupt the website, scrape it in a way that degrades the service for others, or use it to process content you are not allowed to handle. The hosted MCP endpoint is a finishing utility for still photos, with size, rate, and concurrency limits. Do not use it as general-purpose image hosting or batch compute.
Open-source code
The grain library and MCP server are released under the MIT License in the public repository. That license covers the source code. These terms cover use of the hosted website and the services offered at imagegrain.com.
Third-party assistants
If you use imagegrain through a third-party AI assistant (for example Claude Desktop, Muse, or another agent that can call the MCP server), that assistant's own terms and privacy policy also apply. Those products may retain conversation content, including photos you attach. imagegrain does not control that retention.
Availability and changes
The website is provided as-is. Features, limits, and availability can change or stop without notice. We may update these terms; the date at the top of this page will change when we do. Continued use after an update means you accept the revised terms.
Disclaimer and liability
The service is provided without warranties of any kind, to the extent permitted by law, including fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. Results depend on your source photo, settings, and the browser or runtime you use. We are not liable for lost files, interrupted use, or indirect damages, except where liability cannot be limited under applicable law, including injury to life, body, or health, or damage caused by intent or gross negligence.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Federal Republic of Germany, excluding conflict-of-law rules. Mandatory consumer protections in your country of residence remain unaffected. The legal venue is as required by German law; see the Imprint for operator details.
