How to Add Grain in CapCut
CapCut offers three routes to grain: a Grain effect you can search for in the Effects library, a Grain slider in some versions' Adjust panel, and a grain overlay clip blended over your video. Menu names vary between desktop, mobile, and online versions, so search is the most reliable way to find the built-in options.

Method 1: Grain effect
Fastest built-in option on desktop.
- 1
Open the Effects tab and type "Grain" into the search bar.
- 2
Drag a grain effect onto the clip in your timeline, or onto the effects track to cover several clips.
- 3
In the settings panel, adjust Intensity until the grain is visible but not distracting.
CapCut's effect names and layouts change between releases; if a name differs, search for "film" or "noise".
Method 2: Grain slider in Adjust
A simple strength control where your version offers it.
- 1
Select the clip or photo and open Adjust.
- 2
Look for Grain, sometimes grouped under a Details section, and raise it gradually.
Method 3: Grain overlay clip
More realistic, adjustable grain that matches across projects.
- 1
Download an animated grain loop (MP4) and save it to your device.
- 2
Mobile: tap Overlay > Add overlay and pick the grain clip. Desktop: drag the clip onto a track above your footage.
- 3
Stretch the overlay to cover the full frame and the length of the edit.
- 4
Set its blend mode to Overlay or Soft Light, then lower opacity to about 40–80%.

Tips for natural-looking grain
- Vertical videos: set the generator to 1080×1920 before downloading the loop so it fills the frame without stretching.
- Social apps recompress uploads, so slightly coarser grain survives better than very fine grain.
- Add grain last, after filters and color adjustments.

Film grain in CapCut: FAQ
Does CapCut have a grain filter?
Yes. Search the Effects library for "Grain" and adjust the effect's Intensity. Some versions also include a Grain slider in Adjust.
How do I make a grain overlay fit a vertical CapCut video?
Set the generator to 1080×1920 before downloading the video loop, so the grain matches the vertical frame exactly.
Why does my grain disappear after posting?
Platforms recompress video and remove fine detail. Use slightly larger, stronger grain for social uploads.
