How to Add Film Grain in After Effects

After Effects includes a proper grain toolset under Effect > Noise & Grain: Add Grain, Match Grain, and Remove Grain. Add Grain has film-style presets and per-channel controls, but its default viewing mode only shows a small preview box, which confuses many first-time users.

Method 1: Add Grain effect

Native, animated, and highly configurable.

  1. 1

Select the footage layer, or create an adjustment layer (Layer > New > Adjustment Layer) above it.

  2. 2

Apply Effect > Noise & Grain > Add Grain.

  3. 3

Change Viewing Mode from Preview to Final Output, otherwise grain only appears inside the preview rectangle.

  4. 4

Choose a starting Preset, or open Tweaking and set Intensity, Size, and Softness.

  5. 5

Under Blending, adjust how grain is distributed across shadows, midtones, and highlights if needed.

Add Grain is render-heavy. Lower preview resolution while working and check the final render.

Method 2: Match Grain

Copies grain from one shot onto another.

  1. 1

Apply Effect > Noise & Grain > Match Grain to the clean layer.

  2. 2

Set Noise Source Layer to the footage whose grain you want to copy.

  3. 3

Set Viewing Mode to Final Output and adjust if the match is too strong.

Method 3: Grain overlay layer

Fast to render and identical across projects.

  1. 1

Import an animated grain loop and place it at the top of the composition.

  2. 2

Set the layer's blending mode to Overlay (Layer > Blending Mode > Overlay).

  3. 3

Adjust opacity, and enable time remapping or looping to cover the comp's duration.

Recommended After Effects grain settings

Viewing ModeFinal Output (not Preview)
Intensity0.3–0.6 subtle, 0.8–1.2 strong
Size1.0–1.5 for 35mm-like, 2.0+ for 16mm or Super 8
Softness0.5–1.0 to avoid sharp digital specks

Menu names and value ranges can change between After Effects versions.

Tips for natural-looking grain

  • Apply grain on an adjustment layer at the top so it covers graphics and footage evenly.
  • Grain on clean CG and motion graphics helps them sit with live-action footage.
  • If the comp renders slowly, pre-render the grain once and reuse it as an overlay.

Film grain in After Effects: FAQ

Why does Add Grain only show in a box?

Add Grain defaults to Viewing Mode: Preview, which shows grain only inside a small rectangle. Switch Viewing Mode to Final Output to apply it to the whole frame.

What is the difference between Add Grain and Match Grain?

Add Grain creates new grain from settings or presets. Match Grain analyzes another layer's grain and recreates it, which is useful for blending VFX into existing footage.

Is a grain overlay faster than Add Grain?

Usually yes. A pre-rendered overlay is just a blended video layer, so it renders much faster than procedural Add Grain on long compositions.
